Tulips, Soil, and the Wisdom of Nature: Lessons from the Most Northern Tulip Garden in the World

Updated: Dec 13, 2025

When most people hear “tulip bulbs in northern Sweden,” they shake their heads. “Impossible,” they say. But in spring at the end of May, our tulip garden burst into color, a vibrant testament to what can grow when humans work with nature, not against it. Even the World Tulip Association recognized our little corner of the north — a prize we hold with pride, and humility.

Last autumn, as we dug up our bulbs for storage, I felt the magic of the process in every handful of soil. The earth is alive. Not just dirt — but a living, breathing system: worms that keep the soil open, mycelium networks that connect every plant to the heart of the earth, and the sun- and rain-fed rhythms that guide growth. Our donkeys are contributing with fertilizer, even other animals in the wild forest of Sweden, while bees, flies, and other buzzing creatures reminded me that humans are only one part of this symphony.

Working with the soil that day, hands caked in earth, muscles tired, lungs full of crisp autumn air, I realized something fundamental: this is exactly what nature-based coaching is about. We humans often try to control, to plan, to force growth — in work, in life, in ourselves. But true growth happens in collaboration with life around us. It’s slow, patient, messy, alive. The tulips don’t hurry, the worms don’t fret, the mycelium doesn’t argue — and yet, everything grows in rhythm, connected, purposeful.

By the time spring comes, and our tulip garden explodes in color, it is the result of human effort interwoven with nature’s intelligence. Sweat, patience, and curiosity meet earth, sun, animals, and microorganisms — and magic happens.

This is the invitation I offer in nature-based coaching: to reconnect with the rhythms, intelligence, and wisdom you already carry, while learning from the world around you. To work with life — not against it — and to notice the subtle connections that guide growth. Whether it’s tulips, donkeys, huskies, or simply your own inner landscape, there’s a profound clarity in being part of the whole.

If you’re curious about exploring your own natural intelligence, wandering the northern Swedish forests, noticing what really matters, and letting the world — and perhaps a few four-legged friends — guide you, I’d love to welcome you to this experience. Together, we can cultivate insight, connection, and growth — just as we do with the tulips.
